Description:

Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer Inlaid Card Table, probably Langley Boardman (1774-1833),Portsmouth, New Hampshire, c. 1807, the top with elliptic front, half-serpentine ends, and double tapering legs, inlaid throughout with stringing, bellflowers, and panels, ht. 29 3/4, wd. 35 1/4, dp. 18 1/2 in.

Literature: This table is illustrated and discussed in Brock Jobe, Portsmouth Furniture, pp. 254-56, figs. 60A, 60C, and 60E.

Provenance: Originally owned by Joseph Akerman (1740-1832),and housed at the Akerman Mansion at 61 Islington Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Descended in the family along with other Portsmouth-made furniture until 1987, when it was acquired by the consignor. Available with this lot are copies of pages of genealogy relating to the Akerman family, as well as copies of Akerman household inventories, including one from 1823 that lists a table that may well be this one. The Akerman house, built in 1788, was referred to in a 1910 newspaper article as the most "thoroughly built" of the ancient residences of Portsmouth.
