Framed Mary Balch School Needlework Sampler, Sarah Smith, Providence, Rhode Island, c. 1779, stitched with silk threads on linen featuring several lines of verse and alphabets centering an embroidered two-story house with central circular window flanking two women, all within a wide border of embroidered floral vines on the sides, ducks and cats at the top, and two men flanking a circular medallion stitched "Sarah Smith bo/rn February 22/1770 and made/This Auguste/in Providence/1779," ht. 14 1/2, wd. 10 3/4 in.

Note: Sarah Smith was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on February 22, 1770, to Job and Ruth Smith. She died at the age of 18 on September 3, 1788.
