Description:

Large Freestanding Molded Sheet Copper Bannerette Weathervane, Maine, c. 1890-1900, the tapering spire topped with a ball above the pierced and scrolled banner with initials "F.J.G.," possibly for mill owner Flavius J. Goodspeed of Wilton, Maine, original directionals and stepped octagonal base below, ht. 102 in.

Provenance: George & Debbie Spiecker, Fine Americana, North Hampton, New Hampshire, October 1999.

Note: Flavius Goodspeed bought a textile mill in Wilton, Maine, in 1891. He was known to live in a home built in the second half of the 19th century which had a turret at the front and which is now shingled over. This weathervane and mount may have been removed from that turret in 1998.
