Iceland. Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) Islandia. Antwerp: Ortelius, [post-1585]. Two-page folio-format copperplate engraved map with hand-coloring, from a Spanish-language edition of Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum; the map dedicated by Andreas Sorensen Vedel (1542-1616) to Frederick II of Denmark (1534-1588); Vedel is purported to have written a history of Denmark, but it was never published; illustrative map depicts settlements, mountain ranges, fjords, glaciers, and volcanoes; the sea is populated by sixteen different frightening sea monsters, described in detail on the verso, matted and framed, some toning to the sheet, 22 x 16 in. sight.
This accurate and detailed map of Iceland was likely prepared by a native inhabitant, perhaps Gudbrandur Thorlaksson, Bishop of Holar (1541-1627).
