Description:
Europe, Figurative Clover Leaf World Map. Heinrich Bunting (1545-1606) Die Gantze Welt in ein Kleberblat. Folio-format woodcut map originally presented as a double-page opening, from Bunting's Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae; hand-colored, text in German on verso, matted and framed, 14 1/4 x 10 3/4 in. sight.
In this fanciful map, the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa are represented as a three-leaved clover to stand both for the theological trinity, and the emblem of Bunting's hometown, Hanover, Germany. The city of Jerusalem is placed at the center of the trefoil. The American continent, England, and Sweden make marginal appearances, and the seas around contain a ship, seals, and mermaids.
