First English edition, quarto, illustrated with engraved frontispiece, forty-one full-page plates in part one; and five folding engravings tipped onto the page edges or gutter in part two (including the narrow folding engraving of the "joynt-rule"); bound in full contemporary paneled and speckled calf; joints cracked, front board becoming detached; ex library, with the small purple stamp of the Royal Institute of British Architects dated 1839 used rather pervasively throughout, mostly seen on the versos of plates; rare: ESTC reports no U.S. copies of this edition, and only three holdings of the second edition (1671) worldwide, 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 in.
