Description:
Washington, George (1732-1799) Franking Signature, Philadelphia, c. 1775. Signature trimmed from an envelope with Washington's signature and the phrase, "at Philadelphia" in his hand, overwritten with the date 1775, and fragments of three other words written perpendicularly in other hands; mounted on a slip of paper, dusty, some signs of thumbing, 6 3/4 x 1 1/2 in.
If the 1775 date that appears on the envelope, albeit not in Washington's hand, is correct, the document would have been created during the short period while Washington was in Philadelphia serving in the Continental Congress. He was in the city for only about six weeks in 1775, between May 9th and June 23rd; departing after he was chosen by Congress to lead the Continental Army.
