William Worcester Churchill (American, 1858-1926)

Swan Boats on Lake, Public Garden
Signed and dated "Churchill/1919" l.l., signed, inscribed, and titled "W.W.
Churchill/Boston/Swan Boats on Lake/Public Garden" in ink on the reverse, identified on a label from Vose Galleries of Boston affixed to the frame backing.
Oil on canvas, 22 x 26 in. (56.0 x 66.3 cm),framed.
Condition: Minor retouch to fill craquelure, pentimento of a second Churchill signature l.r., minor frame abrasion.

Provenance: Purchased by Charles J. Dunn, Sr. (1901-1983),Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1940; then by descent within the family.

N.B. Churchill was born in Boston's Jamaica Plain, and was part of the first class at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts School. Churchill's subjects - impressionistic plein air views and quiet interior portraits - place him squarely into the Boston School alongside the likes of William Paxton, Edmund Tarbell, and Frank Benson.
