French Shelf Clock with "Coup Perdu" Escapement, c. 1880, heavy brass bezel surrounds the 5 1/2-in. dial with silvered roman numeral chapter ring, engraved sunk center, eight-day time and strike movement with pinwheel and tooth escape wheel, jeweled pallets, "coup perdu," outside escapement on the dial, all on an ebonized scroll-cut stand and rectangular base, with a temperature compensating gridiron pendulum, all under a metal and beveled glass dome, ht. 20 in.
Note: The "coup perdu" escapement allows a clock with a half-second pendulum to advance the second hand in full seconds.
Clock ticks and strikes. Overall very nice condition, small chip to rear glass panel object right lower.
