Description:

British School, 17th Century Style

Colonel Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll (1629-1685)
Unsigned, sitter identified on a handwritten label and a printed label, both affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 29 x 24 in. (73.5 x 61.3 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, fine craquelure, varnish inconsistencies, surface grime.

N.B. The printed label referenced above states that this portrait was used as the frontispiece for the Earl's biography, A Scots Earl in Covenanting Times, written by John Wilcock and published in 1907. The handwritten label states that the sitter was the husband of the countess of Balcarres (Lady Anna Mackenzie). A very similar if not identical portrait, attributed to an unknown artist, is listed as formerly in the collection of the Earl of Balcarres. With the label referencing the countess, it is possible that this portrait is one and the same. The portrait may be found online in the Wikipedia biography of Archibald Campbell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_Campbell,_9th_Earl_of_Argyll) and in the electronic version of Wilcock's biography (https://books.google.com/books?id=jTWMY2jaKP8C&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ViewAPI#v=onepage&q&f=false).
Estimate $800-1,200
