Description:
After Robert Walker (British, 1607-1658)
Portrait of Oliver Cromwell. Unsigned, sitter identified on a handwritten label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 5/8 in., framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, small dent to l.c. edge, fine craquelure, surface grime.
N.B. The copy and the label on the stretcher are thought to be 19th century. Robert Walker painted Cromwell several times, and these portraits were also popularized through engravings, so it is difficult to say precisely on which original this may be based.
