Red-painted Cross-base Candlestand, New England, late 18th/early 19th century, with circular molded top mortised into a chamfered square post and shaped cross base, (imperfections), ht. 25 1/2, dia. 12 in.
The wood in the top could be cherry, and the post and feet could be chestnut or oak. The post in particular is a little hard to read, with the red stain. There has been some effort to plug some holes and reduce the appearance of cracks (braces added to the underside of top, small areas filled with wood putty). There is evidence of old insect activity as well to the post.
