Hill Townscape, Probably Mexico
Oil on canvas, 22 x 30 in., in a molded gilt-gesso frame.
Condition: Relined, minor retouch to stable craquelure in sky and very small areas elsewhere.
Literature: For a discussion of a similarly composed work, see Kathleen A. Foster, Thomas Chambers: American Marine and Landscape Painter, 1808-1869, pp. 73-74, fig. 3-34. Foster notes that this subject, likely adapted from an 1848 print by John Frost, was painted by Chambers at least six times.
