Dorothy Norman (American, 1905-1997)
Two Photographs: Church Steeple III, Falmouth, Cape Cod and Gravestone (Mother) II, Chatham, Cape Cod, 1937. Steeple signed "Dorothy Norman" in blue ballpoint pen, titled, dated, and annotated in pencil, and stamped "ORIGINAL BY/DOROTHY NORMAN" in blue ink on the mount and on an additional support; Gravestone titled, dated, and annotated in pencil and stamped "ORIGINAL BY/DOROTHY NORMAN" and "FOR PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM/COLLECTION DOROTHY NORMAN" in red ink on the mount verso. Gelatin silver prints flush-mounted to board and then mounted again to board, image/sheet sizes to 3 5/8 x 2 1/2 in. (9.2 x 6.4 cm),matted, unframed.
Condition: Steeple with minor emulsion losses at lower edge, Gravestone with subtle crease at u.r. corner.
Provenance: Gift of the photographer to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1980 and 1984; sold with the approval of the Trustees of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to benefit acquisition funds.
