Unsigned, inscribed "From the collection of the late/Dowager Duchess of Beaufort/Stoke Park" on a partial label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 49 5/8 x 40 in. (126.0 x 101.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure.

Provenance: Purchased by the current owner in 1994 from the estate of Edith Monroe of Newport, Rhode Island. Edith Monroe was a descendant of President James Monroe.

Original canvas was trimmed of its tacking edges, lined, and re-stretched on a newer stretcher. Horizontal line of repair with retouch across the canvas at the figure's eye level, with a secondary repair extending vertically from the inside corner of the sitter's left eye down to his chin, with areas of paint lifting along the repair primarily in the background and wig. Small areas of repair with some lifting on the sitter's left sleeve of his red cloak, 2 inches above his white sleeve and measuring about 3/4 inch diameter, and an area of about 1/2 inch diameter at l.c. Other areas of broad retouch to the background and to fill areas of craquelure. Scattered old minor paint losses. Fine stable craquelure overall. Under raking light some inconsistencies in varnish application are visible.
