Description:

Barbizon School, 19th Century

Farmhouse
Unsigned, attributed on a handwritten loan label from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on paper mounted to canvas, 8 x 12 1/4 in. (20.5 x 31.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Varnish discoloration, craquelure.

Provenance: A New Jersey estate through to the current owner.

N.B. Labels on the stretcher indicate that the painting was lent to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from March 17, 1919, until June 14, 1922. The numbers and lender name written on the labels correspond to loan documentation in the museum archives. The painting was identified on the original loan receipt as "Landscape" by Rousseau. However, current scholarship has determined that this work is not by Theodore Rousseau.
Estimate $800-1,200
