Hand-painted Earthenware Shakespeare Dish, England, c. 1884, polychrome enamel decorated cream-colored body with central portrait surrounded by allegorical figures and verses, dia. 14 3/4 in.

Note: Staffordshire potters often supplied blanks to art colleges and the like. There were often competitions and exhibitions of their works. The reverse of the dish has a partial paper label titled "Exhibition" and "Derby 1884."
