Description:

Carved Mahogany "Harp Pattern" Timepiece, Phineas P. Quimby, Belfast, Maine, c. 1820-30, with acanthus leaf-carved lyre or harp pattern front and eglomise tablet, the iron dial lettered "P.P. Quimby Belfast," old surface, (bracket later), ht. 38 1/2 in.

Literature: There is a reference to this maker in Willard's Patent Timepieces, by Paul J. Foley, which notes, "by 1840 Quimby had become an avid practitioner of mental healing-one of his patients and pupils was Mary Baker Eddy. She credited him as her teacher and adopted the name 'Christian Science' which Quimby had used in his work."
