Firefighters' Log Book, Engine 23, Fire Department of New York City, July through October 1883. Folio format log book, ruled throughout, 501 numbered pages, inscribed throughout, beginning with an account of the company's consumption of gas, followed by a roster of the company, listing fourteen men, their addresses, and other notes, including transfers; the following 496 pages contain the daily logs, with each day taking up several pages as the movements of the firefighters and their calls are recorded by the minute through each twenty-four hour period; handwritten text throughout in black and red ink; bound in contemporary half leather, worn, with losses, 13 3/4 x 8 in.
