James Fitzgerald (American, 1899-1971)
Fishermen, A Double-sided Work
Signed "James Fitzgerald" l.r. on both the face and the reverse.
Watercolor on paper, 20 x 26 in. (50.8 x 66.0 cm), in an original, hand-gilded Fitzgerald frame.
Condition: Pinhole punctures, adhesive remnants on the reverse, surface grime.
N.B. The signed composition on the reverse depicts three fishermen from the back looking over rocks and a rough sea.
When the frame was opened during cataloging, it was discovered that the work is double sided, and it is the composition on the reverse that bears the signature.
Pinhole punctures present at all four corners of the paper. Adhesive remnants along the bottom edge on the front, and along the top edge of the verso. No further condition issues to report.
Robert Stahl, who is preparing the Fitzgerald catalogue raisonne, reports that " the frame is an original hand gilded Fitzgerald frame - he was a master gilder and this one has both his frame and a gold insert. "
Frame dimensions: 27 1/2 x 31 in.
