Alvin Langdon Coburn (American/British, 1882-1966)

A Tree in Greyfriars Churchyard, Edinburgh, 1905, plate XII in Robert Louis Stevenson, Edinburgh, Picturesque Notes (London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1954). Unsigned, titled, and dated in pencil on the verso along the bottom. Photogravure, image size 7 1/2 x 6 1/4 in. (19.0 x 15.8 cm),matted, framed.
Condition: Good.

Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection.

N.B. Coburn began his serious pursuit of photography after meeting his distant cousin and fellow Bostonian F. Holland Day in 1898. While still a teenager, he became associated with the intellectual and aesthetic concerns of the Pictorialist movement in New York and London where he settled permanently in 1912.
