Signed, dated, and inscribed "East Boston Trenton St. 3rd Sep.../W.M. Prior 1849/$--.00" on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, the boy seen full-length in an interior, both hands holding the string to his toy wagon which carries his hammer and basket, a seashell on the ground at his feet, 29 1/2 x 25 1/4 in., in an ogee molded mahogany veneer frame.
Condition: Relined, areas and spots of retouch, frame with losses.
retouch in small spots to face, and in an area around mouth and nose, lines and spots in background, several small areas in dress, and in lower left quadrant, where it appears that the angle of the subject's left leg, and the placement of the wagon cord was changed at some point.
