Portrait of a Mother and Child. Inscribed "Binney/1843" on a small patch of canvas affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Relined, retouch.

retouch to strengthen the woman's dress, and a large spot in the woman's cheek, further inpaint to address frame abrasion and edge wear, particularly at the upper and lower edges, a couple small spots in the baby's dress, a small area to address a puncture repair in the background at upper left, and spots and small areas in the drapery beyond the woman. The stretcher appears original though the frame is an appropriate but later replacement.
