Description:

Three Woodblock Prints and a Triptych, Japan, 19th century, three depicting women: two Toyokuni III (1786-1865),one from the series Famous Places of Edo Compared with One Hundred Beautiful Women, signed "Toyokuni ga" in Toshidama cartouche, and one Kuniyoshi (1797-1861),framed and glazed; and a triptych of separately mounted prints by Kuniteru (1808-1876),Sumo Wrestlers Entering the Ring, depicting sumo wrestlers and spectators, all oban tate-e; sizes to 13 1/2 x 9 3/4 in.

Provenance: Purchased in Beijing at the turn of the century when the current owner's grandmother was stationed at the Princeton University Alumni organized YMCA outpost, as reported in The Princeton Alumni Weekly, Vol. XIV No. 18, February 11, 1914.
