Provenance: A private Florida collection.
N.B. The Gaan dancers are meant to be physical manifestations of the mountain spirits. Though generally benevolent, helping to prevent disease and in healing, these spirits can become vengeful if they are not shown proper respect. They can control weather and offer protection from enemies. The dancers perform in various rituals to bring the blessings of the mountain spirits to their people.
