Description:

After Henry Perlee Parker (British, 1795-1873)

Looking Out
. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in., framed. Condition: Restored, lined, retouch.

N.B. This painting is closely related to a known engraving created in 1836 by William O. Geller of the same title. It is possible that this work is the original painting created by Henry Perlee Parker, from which William O. Geller created Looking Out(1). Based on a stencil that was once visible on the verso canvas "JAs Spore 101 Fourth Street St. Louis, Mo," it is also possible that the painting is a copy after the engraving by an American painter from the St. Louis area. Geller also created another engraving after a Parker painting titled The Covenanter, which sold at auction in 2004. Photographs of the back of the original canvas, and research notes accompany this lot.

Estimate $1,000-1,500

Paint surface is stabile and clean. Canvas has been lined, thus original St. Louis stencil is no longer visible. UV examination shows scattered retouch with a horizontal line lower segment and minor touch up in face.
