Continental School, 17th Century Style

Esther Before Ahasuerus
Unsigned.
Oil on canvas, 37 1/4 x 51 1/4 in. (94.5 x 130.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Damage with losses to l.r. edge, retouch, craquelure, surface grime.

N.B. The painting depicts a scene from the Book of Esther (in the Apocrypha), in which Esther, the Jewish queen of Persia, pleads before her husband Ahasuerus for the repeal of his decree ordering the massacre of all Jews in his kingdom.

With a partial label from the Worcester Art Museum on the back of the frame.
