Georgian-style Red Japanned Cabinet Secretary, with overall red ground and gilt decorated chinoiserie motifs including bird, floral and vine, and architectural follies, the upper case with a shaped pediment projection surmounting two tombstone paneled doors, which open to reveal multiple correspondence slots, small drawers and compartments, above candle slides, over a lower case with slant-lid drop-front four-drawer desk, fitted with interior centralized compartment, drawers and correspondence slots, all supported on bracket feet, ht. 86, wd. 36 1/4, dp. 20 1/4 in.
Japanning probably later (painted craquelure surface, minor losses throughout). Right side of fall-front re-applied. Each side panel of lower case bowed, cracked through and with related joint separation visible down the length of the front. Scattered cracks, losses, warping, minor restoration throughout. Hardware replaced (one drawer lacking bail handle). Upper right drawer of lower case with loss to lower molding (present but loose). Back paneling loose/cracking in areas.
