Provenance is provided on a handwritten label in French on the stretcher, giving the following information, roughly translated as" the painting belonged to the duc d'Uzès, it presents Louis XIV in an ermine lined cloak. The painting is surely 17th century, from the period of Rigaud. The painting has an old lining. The painting has historic and documentary significance." The label is signed by "Georges Terisse, Arbitre, Expert près le tribunal civil de la Seine " (Georges Terisse, Expert at the Civil Court of the Seine ).
Printed label from "Biblioteque de M. Le Duc d'Uzès, Chateau de Bonnelles" also affixed to the stretcher.
With a modern label from Andre Chenu & Fils, Paris, Transports Internationaux, also on the stretcher.
