Description:

Salt-glazed Stoneware Ale Mug, England, c. 1703-10, probably London, cylindrical shape with ridged loop handle above an impressed "AR" ale-measure marker with crown, the body partially decorated with a reddish-brown iron wash, the rim with a wide silver band bordered with acanthus leaves, bearing a partially obscure and unidentified hallmark, ht. 5 1/4 in.

Two silver acanthus leaves missing; no evidence of any cracks, chips or restorations.
