William Platt and Maria Taylor Platt: A Pair of Portraits
Monogrammed and dated "TS/1841" l.r. and l.l., respectively.
Oil on canvas, 20 1/4 x 17 1/4 in. (51.3 x 43.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, portrait of Maria has spots of inpainting at edges and a few spots in the background; portrait of William has a few spots of inpainting in the background and a repaired 1 1/2 inch tear in his jacket.

Provenance: By descent within the Platt family to the current owner.

Literature: Edward Biddle and Mantle Fielding, The Life and Works of Thomas Sully (Philadelphia: Wickersham Press, 1921),entries 1386 and 1387, pp. 248-49.

N.B. Maria Platt (née Taylor) married William Platt of Philadelphia. According to Sully's records, her portrait, painted for her daughter Mrs. David Pepper, was begun May 4 and finished May 25, 1841. Her husband, William Platt, was an East Indian merchant of Philadelphia and father of Charles Platt, President of the Insurance Company of North America. Sully's notes indicate that his portrait was begun June 4 and finished June 14, 1841.
