Signed "E. Lawson" l.l.
Oil on canvas, 20 1/4 x 24 3/8 in. (51.3 x 62.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Minor retouch to u.r. corner, craquelure, surface grime.
Provenance: From the artist to his colleague Edgar Sergeant, by family descent to the current owner.
N.B. Ernest Lawson and Edgar Sergeant became friends as young painters studying at the Art Students League. This painting was done as Lawson's career was showing great promise. In 1916, the Lawson won a prize from the Corcoran Gallery that allowed him to take his family abroad. He painted in Segovia and Toledo, where the bright light of the Spanish landscape inspired the artist to lighten his palette. When he returned to the United States in 1917, he was elected to full membership in the National Academy.
