Ernest Lawson (American, 1873-1939)
Gardener's Cottage, George Jones Dyer Estate, Norfolk, Connecticut
Signed "E LAWSON" l.r., inscribed indistinctly on the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (51.0 x 61.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Very minor paint loss to center.
Provenance: From the collection of George Jones Dyer, Norfolk, Connecticut, then by descent to the current owner.
N.B. George Jones Dyer of Norfolk, Connecticut, was a patron of Ernest Lawson, and it is believed that he commissioned Lawson to paint this scene. Interestingly, the subject depicted is not the main house on Dyer's property, but the gardener's cottage.
