Signed and dated "Stanley W Woodward 26" l.r., identified on fragmentary label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 28 1/8 x 36 1/4 in. (71.5 x 92.0 cm),in a period frame.
Condition: Tear to l.l. quadrant, craquelure, minor surface grime.
Provenance: Purchased from the artist by Herbert Wilson, Melrose, Massachusetts, by 1937, then by descent to the current owner.
N.B. A letter from the artist to Mr. Herbert Wilson, accompanies the lot, as well as a number of clippings about the artist's work.

Vertical tear to l.l. quadrant measuring 4 1/2 inches, located 7 inches up from the bottom and 6 1/2 inches in from the left edge.
Inscribed "painted by Stanley W Woodward/1929" in pencil on the stretcher. This would appear to be in the artist's hand, but that is not confirmed. The date given in the inscription, however, does not match the date on the front. With a partial handwritten label on the stretcher providing the beginning of the title "High..." and bearing the number "C-7147." Further inscribed "OVER FIREPLACE" on the stretcher
