Manuel Álvarez Bravo (Mexican, 1902-2002)
Espejo Negro (Black Mirror), 1947, printed later. Signed "M Alvarez Bravo" in pencil on the verso l.r., additional pencil annotations on the verso on the lower half of the sheet. Gelatin silver print on single weight paper, image/sheet size 14 5/8 x 11 in. (37.0 x 28.0 cm), matted, framed.
Condition: Scattered minor surface crimps and ripples.
N.B. The subject of Álvarez Bravo's photograph is the American model and dancer Maudelle Bass. During the 1930s and 1940s Bass modelled for several American and Mexican artists, including Edward Weston and Diego Rivera.
There is an overall uneveness to the surface of the sheet likely because of its single weight and handling over time. Subtle horizontal creases/crimps in u.r. and u.l., minor crimps at c.l. and c.r.
