Description:

Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951)

Little Old Squaw, 1912, edition of 25 (Paff, 6). Signed "FrankWBenson." in pencil l.l., initialed within the plate, pencil sketches on the verso. Etching with drypoint on laid paper, plate size 2 7/16 x 3 7/16 in. (6.2 x 8.5 cm), matted, unframed.
Condition: Subtle toning, pinhole to edge of upper margin, pencil annotations to lower margin.

N.B. According to Paff this same bird was used in the 1915 etching Old Squaws. While twenty-five impressions of Little Old Squaw were pulled, they were never offered for sale.

This is certainly born out by the two drawings on the reverse. Both are complete compositions of a sailboat; one drawn within the plate mark, the other in the substantial lower margin.
Estimate $400-600

The sheet measures 5 9/16 x 5 1/8 in. There are thin brown paper tape hinges to the upper corners (recto) and white cloth tap hinges to the same (verso).
