Quarto journal, written by hand in English on ruled paper, ownership inscription of William H. Allen, 69 Grove Street, New Haven, Connecticut on ffep; recounting a journey from Panama to Central America in 1865, the trip departing from New York, and including stops in Guatemala, a voyage of 7,000 miles, that took three months and fourteen days to complete; the journal writer returned to the States on Wednesday, April 26, 1865, and mentions being informed of Lincoln's assassination, "the announcement of the surrender of Lee's army, otherwise so important, was hardly noticed in view of the great calamity"; inscribed over approximately 120 pages, contemporary half leather, marbled paper boards, 7 3/4 x 6 3/4 in.
