William Cummens Mahogany Tall Clock with Rocking Ship Automaton, Roxbury, c. 1800, fret-top case with reeded plinths and brass finials, reeded and brass stop-fluted freestanding columns flanking the glazed hood door over the 12-in. painted iron Roman numeral dial with faint signature reading Warranted W. Cummens, with raised gilt floral decorated spandrels, and rocking ship flying the American flag automaton in the arch against a rocky coast with two ships and a tower flying the American flag, molded-edge rectangular waist door with banded and line inlays flanked by reeded columns, original set-up label pasted to interior, base with similar inlay treatment, all resting on a high French foot base, eight-day time, and hour strike, brass movement with pendulum, and two tin-cased weights, ht. 95 in.
nice old surface, original fret with some losses at each end, dial paint original with weak signature, feet original with new rear bracket
