Description:

American School, 19th Century

Portrait of a Boy and His Dog
Unsigned.
Oil on canvas, the child wearing a checked dress and embroidered pantaloons, his right hand on a black and white dog, and seascape with lighthouse and vessels beyond, 27 x 22 in., in a gilt-gesso frame.
Condition: Relined, varnished.
Estimate $4,000-6,000

The painting has some minor spots and lines of retouch in the dress and a small area on the forehead which is visible under the UV light. There are some small scattered spots of retouch in the background. It was relined probably in the mid-20th century and it appears that a new stretcher was put on at that time. The frame dates to the mid-20th century.
