Description:

Silver Tankard, Thomas Savage, Sr., Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1700, the straight tapered sides on body with molded rim and applied molded base, with raised circular single-step lid with flat top engraved with broad flower and urn motif, crenellated at the front, cast thumbpiece, five-segment cast hinge, hollow C-curved handle with heart terminus at bottom, the handle with engraved monograms "P/I*E" and with maker's marks "TS/*" in a heart-shaped cartouche, struck on the top of the lid and twice on the underside of the base, spout added, (imperfections),ht. 6 1/2 in.

Provenance: The tankard was presented to Philip Schuyler Hamilton (1920-2006) on the occasion of his christening, December 26, 1920. According to a letter dated the same day and signed by Louisa Lee Schuyler and Georgina Schuyler (accompanying the lot),the tankard descended in the family of General Philip Schuyler and it was remembered to have sat on a sideboard in the Schuyler Mansion in Albany, New York, during the 19th century.
