School of Thomas Hudson (British, 1701-1779)
Portrait of a Gentleman, thought to be John Porter, c. 1732-1793
Unsigned, sitter identified on a partial label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 49 1/4 x 40 1/4 in. (125.0 x 102.2 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, craquelure.
N.B. Affixed to the stretcher is a handwritten partial label that reads "John Porter, d.1793/He married Jane Thornton." Genealogical research undertaken by the current owner reveals a John Porter of Yorkshire, England, who was married to Jane Thornton, also of Yorkshire. Files give conflicting dates of birth for John Porter (c. 1732 or c. 1740), as well as for his marriage (1756 or 1776).
