Portrait of a British Gentleman
Inscribed Wad...Wyndam/An...1700" u.r., inscribed "Wadm. Wyndham A.../
./age 39 1700" in a later hand on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 29 3/4 x 24 3/4 in. (75.5 x 63.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, repair with craquelure u.c. edge, scattered minor losses, probable old retouch, canvas deformation, craquelure, surface grime.
Estimate $300-500

Under UV examination the surface presents as a milky white due to varnish, preventing a close examination for retouch. Varnish layer discolored. Canvas rippling most noticeable in the u.l. and l.r. corners. Stable craquelure. Old repair to u.l., just at the top of the sitter's wig measuring roughly 1/2 inch vertically. Scattered minor paint losses.
