Old Farmer or The Cottage Door
Signed indistinctly l.l., artist and title identified on a presentation plaque and on a label from
The Fine Art Society, Ltd., London, affixed to the verso, old label with ink inscription reads: "an etching of this picture 'The Cottage Door' was made inscribed J.F. Lewis fecit 1835."
Oil on paper laid on panel, 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (29.2 x 19.0 cm), framed (under glass).
Condition: Craquelure, varnish discoloration.
Provenance: By descent from the current owner's grandmother.
When the frame was opened for further examination, it was found that the work is likely on paper laid down on panel. There is also a faint inscription or signature located l.l. just below and to the left of the figure's right boot. Very minor retouch, stable craquelure, high gloss varnish. Labels affixed to the back identify artist, and provide a biography and history of the work. Lewis created an engraving of this subject (in reverse) in 1835.
