Berenice Abbott (American, 1898-1991)

Waterfront, South Street, Manhattan, 1935. With the photographer's Federal Art Project "Changing New York" hand stamp on the verso c.r., titled and dated with numeric notations in pencil and with the photographer's "56 w. 53rd st." studio address stamp on the verso at center.
Condition: Sheet of dry mounting tissue and paper residue affixed to the verso of the print indicating that it has been removed from its mount, print is attached to an overmat with linen tape hinges affixed to the verso, scattered shiny areas on the surface of the print.

N.B. For nearly a decade, the American-born photographer Berenice Abbott lived in Paris, working as an assistant to Man Ray in his portrait studio and eventually operating her own portrait business. Upon returning to New York City in 1929, Abbott continued to practice photography, producing a body of work that focused on New York's changing buildings and neighborhoods. With funds from the Federal Art Project (FAP),Abbott produced hundreds of photographs of the city, including this view.

Image/sheet measures 7 1/4 x 9 3/8 inches. Minor surface losses l.c. possibly due to the removal of an adhesive substance (residue visible in raking light). The image is brown in tone with possibly fading.
