Signed and inscribed "F.O.Andreini Firenze." on the reverse of the base, titled on
the front of the base.
White marble, height 38 1/2 in. (97.7 cm).
Condition: Repairs to her right hand and wrist (pinkie detached),small chip to her right sleeve, abrasions to base, surface grime.
Provenance: A private Illinois collection.
N.B. The subject refers to the heroine Margherita from Goethe's Faust. Here she contemplates a box of jewels, just before her seduction by the title character. Another version of this work by Andreini and dated 1880 is in the collection of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia in Spain.
