Carved and Painted Pine Hanging Spice Box, Samuel L. Plank (Mifflin County, 1821-1900), Pennsylvania, last quarter 19th century, with scroll-carved backsplash over two drawers, the rectangular lift-top opens to a divided interior, original decoration of blue and yellow birds and roses on an ochre ground, pencil inscription on the back reads: "Manufactured by S.L. Plank 3 miles South East of Allensville Pa. Price 1.25 Presented to Jacob & Lydia by Father and Mother Samuel and Catherine," ht. 15 1/2, wd. 13, dp. 7 1/2 in.
Faded to a light orange from the original salmon. Structurally good. The drawer divider is loose.
