Condition: Lined, skinning, stable craquelure overall, surface grime.
N.B. Elements in the composition of this work are similar to Richard Wilson's The White Monk, particularly in the bluff with the cross and placement of foreground figures, although the view is reversed or seen from the other side.

Identified as "Painting by Peterson" in a pencil inscription on a hanging tag from Sheridan Art Galleries, Chicago, wired to the back of the frame.
Under UV examination, the surface appears milky white, with no obvious areas of retouch, although conservation may have been done long enough ago that the paint no longer fluoresces.
