Middleton Manigault (Canadian, 1887-1922)
View of Paris. Signed and dated "Manigault 1912" l.r., inscribed "Paris" l.l. Watercolor and charcoal on paper, sight size 9 1/2 x 14 in., framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame.
N.B. Manigault left his native Canada and moved to New York in 1906, where he studied with Robert Henri at the New York School of Art, along with fellow students Edward Hopper and George Bellows. He traveled to Europe in 1912, the year this was painted. Manigault suffered from bouts of depression, and as a result, shortly before his death he destroyed over 200 of his own works of art.
