After Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (French, 1827-1875)
Napoleon at the St. Bernard Pass. Inscribed "Carpeaux" in the bronze and with a button medallion imprinted "European Finery/Bronze" on the base, both beside the horse's right back leg. Bronze with green/gold patina, height 10 5/8 in., on a oval metal plinth.
N.B. This copy after a Carpeaux bronze is based on idealized equestrian portraits of Napoleon crossing the Alps painted by Jacques-Louis David between 1801 and 1805.
