Michael Mazur (American, 1935-2009)
Woman in an Asylum. Signed "Mazur" l.r. Charcoal on artist board, 30 x 40 in., framed. Condition: Minor discoloration to board along edges (backed with cardboard).
N.B. In the 1960s, Mazur volunteered as a hospital aide in a Rhode Island mental asylum. He captured his experience through drawings and a series titled Images from a Locked Ward, a portfolio of fourteen etchings and lithographs. In a New York Times article, John Canaday wrote, "These lost souls have the terrible anonymity of individuals who cannot be reached, whose ugly physical presence is only the symptom of a tragic spiritual isolation.'
